Ka-ching!

Reflection on the window of room at the hostel
August 07, 2004, Saturday

Exams has barely gotten into full swing and I'm hoping that it will end soon. Sat for first paper yesterday- Thinking Skills Paper 1 (Yes, we have to attend classes to help us think). Wasn't that bad; did pretty OK, I think (see, I can think!). I long for the day when this studying-for-exams madness stops, so that I could once again bask in the glory of movies. I miss my weekly movie fix; last movie watched was the messy I, Robot which I'd given the crappy verdict it deserves.

Over at RottenTomatoes, Collateral has garnered raving reviews. RottenTomatoes isn't always accurate, but when more than 20 critics have given their thumbs-up, the film is probably worth watching. As a practice of sort for my Thinking Skills Paper 2 (in which long essay-like answers are required), I'm going to identify the assumption in that statement I've just given: It's assumed that the critics are credible as movie reviewers; that they're not swayed by charming Tom Cruise into giving high ratings to the movie and more importantly they're not paid to sing praises. Isn't it evident that I can think?

Here's something (found on Ten Years of My Life) that might be of interest to those who need cool artsy stuff to adorn their living room with the sole purpose of impressing friends and foes alike who come a-visiting: Rasterbator. "The Rasterbator is a web service which creates huge rasterized pictures out of relatively small image files. The pictures can be assembled into extremely cool looking posters up to 20 meters in size". I can vouch for that claim. Even with my applying my thinking skills, I can find nary a flaw in that statement. Will definitely rasterize some of my photographs and force Papa to jetisson his Chinese paintings and put my photos up instead in the living room.

Another great find: List of company name etymologies (via Kotkke.org). Ever wondered how Google, Apple, Microsoft, Nikon and the like got their name? Wonder no more with that cool list! Personal company-name-origin favourites: Slashdot and Six Apart (find them on the list).

I don't see how I can post entries in the coming week what with the exams. While I'm away, help yourself with the archive. I'll be leaving for home for one week of post-exams break; will make up for the lack of updates then. Can't say for sure or make any promises right now, but I have plans to post an entry a day for that whole week. Meanwhile, I need your help: Click through rates of Google ads have not been satisfactory. I would love to get a cheque from Google, so please take notice of the adverts Google serves up on the left and tap on them if they're relevant. Calling upon my thinking skills for one last time for this entry, I would say that "relevant" is one ambiguous word. Say you're not interested in this particular text ad prior to this. But after reading this entry, you find yourself gravitating towards it, hence making it relevant. Gettit?
