Ka-ching!

Is America a nation of gun nuts - or just nuts? In Bowling For Columbine, Michael Moore (read his blog) takes it upon himself to find out just that. Using the Columbine High School shooting as a launchpad, Moore sets out to ascertain the cause(s) behind gun violence in America.

At one point, Moore boils it down to fear; he blames the politicians, corporations and the mainstream media for doling out 1984-esque fear-based propaganda. Moore does make a good point there but the funny thing is, fear is exactly what Bowling For Columbine uses to get its message across. Moore makes us believe that America is a "pretty scary place" to be living in by contrasting the States with relatively "safer" Canada, showing haunting statistics, sneaking in a personal attack or two on Thief-in-Chief Bush, and bullying an elderly man who happens to be the President of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

To build its case, this site, which criticises the film, bases most of its claims on Moore's attempt to discredit the NRA. While the take on NRA is nothing more than a sidedish in Bowling For Columbine, the site makes a sweeping conclusion that the documentary is "fictional" and "deceptive". Moore, of course, wouldn't live that down and offers his own rebuttals here.

To be fair, Bowling For Columbine has its merits. Moore does indeed live up to his "use humour" mantra when dealing with sensitive issues. And the film is as thought-provoking as Fahrenheit 9/11 (read my review here) and less biased too (relatively). If you have watched this documentary, do share your thoughts. If you haven't, be sure to catch it on AXN tonight.
