Ka-ching!

March 23, 2005, Wednesday

Despite many of its obvious flaws, I love this shot. Yes, it could have been better compositional-wise and the lens flare mars the photo in a way. But, this could have been another boring rule-of-thirds shot without the imperfections. The unintended lens flare, especially, goes well with the shades the kid is wearing. Then again, this is my trying to justify my lack of talent in photography.

Some folks were terribly upset after reading my previous post. It was I'm-going-to-send-the-asshat(©Airbag)-hate-mails kind of upset. Overnight, my inbox was flooded by mails bearing malicious-sounding subjects. Some were even laced with threats. One I found extremely creepy came attached with a .gif file of a bullet.

Doesn't anyone read the fine prints nowadays? I made it clear in the disclaimer that I didn't mean most of the awful stuff I wrote in the previous entry. I didn't mean to sound like Maddox; the post was merely a harmless dig on advice columns in the papers. At least that was what I thought until the malevolent missives started trickling in.

Someone writing under the pseudonym "I'm-Fat-And-Loving-It" was one of those who had kindly dropped me a (hate) mail. I feel that I owe her an explaination, so here goes:

To: I'm-Fat-And-Loving-It,

I'm terribly sorry to have misled you into thinking that cellulite is the anathema of beauty. To set the record straight, I have nothing against horizontally-challenged girls. Case in point: I rooted for extremely-talented-but-a-tad-plump Dina all the way even when it became clear that Jaq was definitely going to become the first Malaysian Idol. So yeah, a nice personality does go a long way compared to looks. Hope that helps you enjoy those Big Macs without worrying about your dress size. Love the animated bullet in your email, btw; it goes so well alongside my collection of gun cliparts.

Luckily, I've my share of nice readers who voluntarily (though some will argue that I used some form of coercion) nominated me for the 2005 Photobloggies Awards. Without their collective effort, there's no way I could have been chosen as one of the finalists in four distinct categories (Best South East Asian / Indian Photoblog, Best Writing of a Photoblog , Best Kept Secret Photoblog and Best Photoblog Design). Under all four categories, I'm up against established names in the world of photoblogs. Think Alexander Payne vs Clint Eastwood.

Dear readers, I'm happy just to be listed as one of the few finalists. But, you know how one is never content with what one has. Just so that you know, winning Best Writing of a Photoblog would really make my day. However, you're encouraged to check out all finalists before casting your votes. I do hope you decide in my favour.

Voting is similar to nominating. Select my blog (http://odds-and-ends.net) under the aforementioned categories and submit your ballot. A valid email address is required and again, you have to remember to validate your votes. Thank you!
