No real man should profess love for girly shows like Gilmore Girls. I love Gilmore Girls, which is exactly why it is not a girly show at all. Manly man or girly girl alike should be able to relate to Rory not getting an internship at The New York Times and her worries about what lies ahead when her hope and dreams seem to be falling apart. And if you don't like the show with the most likable and prettiest girl ever to grace TV land, don't you dare call yourself a man! Then again, I blame it on Gilmore Girls' asking-to-be-pigeonholed-as-a-girly-show title.
Witty word plays, clever metaphors, smart references to popular culture; these are the hallmarks of good writing. Judging with that in mind, Gilmore Girls had to be the second best-written show on TV (or on video sharing sites a click away) after The Colbert Report. Heroes is great and all but its dialogues cannot get any crappier.
To be fair, Gilmore Girls had been on a trip down the drain after Rory got into Yale and I thought that they should have ended the show on a high note. But now that it's finally over, it's hard to let Rory go. In case you haven't figured out from the allusions to that Rory girl in my posts, I sort of fancy her. So what happened to Rory in the end? She graduated from Yale and rejected her longtime boyfriend's marriage proposal (Way to go! Girls should never marry young even to the person she really really likes!) and got a cool job as a reporter on Barack Obama's presidential campaign trail (another not so subtle support for Obama). What then happened to the other Gilmore girl, the mother? She could end up with Luke or Kirk (not that Kirk should dump his hot Lulu girlfriend) and I couldn't quite care less.
Even though I haven't quite read every single book you've read which I promised to do, I would like to try asking again: Are you gonna be my girl now that you've jettisoned that rich and good-looking boyfriend of yours? I'll proffer my official support to Barack Obama too if you do say yes!
